System for Asset Maintenance Management - SAMM
SAMM (System for Asset Maintenance Management) optimizes the use of assets that have a long life cycle and require maintenance, such as aircraft, trains, automobiles, (military) vehicles and heavy machinery. The goal of SAMM is to maximize and extend the life cycle of these types of products by making sure the product is operational as much as possible, hence by reducing the time for maintenance to a minimum.
As illustrations and text should always be based on single sourcing, visual search in publications becomes an important extra feature that we can provide.
Product information can be presented to the end user by holding a camera device (available on smart phones, laptops, tablets or head mounting displays (HMD)) in front of the product. The camera device will recognize the object, and the display will present the desired type of information, including product information, maintenance procedures, etc. by using augmented reality technology.
This technology enables you to give training on location in “real time”. By using content standards like STE, S1000D and SCORM, and by applying single sourcing (XML) and a content management system, it will be easy to retrieve the type of information necessary to give training.
Thus, Tedopres maps all the necessary maintenance activities, connects them and transfers the knowledge for executing these maintenance procedures to the end user in a very user-friendly way.
SAMM was originally developed for the Dutch Ministry of Defence. As of this year, the technology is available for the civil industry as well.
How does SAMM work?

In order to transfer information (for instance, a maintenance procedure) to the end user, one needs a camera device. This could be a Head-mounted display (HMD), a webcam or even the camera on a phone.
The camera, in combination with augmented reality software, recognizes markers, which are used to program the type of information the end user needs to see. It does so by adding a layer on top the concerning machine in the form of a 3D illustration. The 3D illustration then shows the end user the maintenance procedure in a very clear and effective way.
SAMM features
Diagnose
By making an inventory and by coding all features, errors and their potential causes and consequences, the diagnose feature is made. Based on FMECA, a product that requires maintenance is divided into risk components, where each component is subject to an (risk) analysis. The analysis forms the basis for the maintenance plan, which complies with standards such as S1000D and 2000M. The result is that the technician can analyze and determine the failure on location by connecting SAMM to the concerning product.
Plan
It’s not only possible to request SAMM for the status of maintenance, but you can also change the maintenance plan, including insight into questions like ‘when should the next maintenance procedure take place’ and which parts may need to be replaced. This is done by using check lists which can be flagged as completed via verbal commands (speech).
Logistics
Maintenance procedures are automatically registered in a status report, which can be connected to an online central server so that you always have the most up to date information available. That way maintenance doesn’t take place twice or too late.
Ordering parts
During a maintenance procedure or analysis in order to determine what went wrong, SAMM automatically gives insight into which parts will need to be replaced. Moreover, the technician is given the possibility to order the concerning parts immediately online. The use of 3D illustrations also allows the technician to do a visual search to make sure the correct part is ordered.
Training
As 3D illustrations can easily be turned into animations or simulations, SAMM also makes it possible to give effective training, where it’s not even required for the trainer to be present on site.
Manage information
It’s essential that information is created, managed and stored in a structured way. Tedopres’ Content Management System HyperDoc allows you to publish the information in SAMM to various other types of output.

The making of SAMM - videoblog (in Dutch)
After winning the (Dutch) Defense Innovation Competition in November 2009, all contracts were signed last August and things could get started. The progression of this innovation project can be followed though this videoblog.
Workshop Speech technology
On Friday, January 7, 2011, the SAMM team was a guest at DutchEar. DutchEar had organized a workshop for speech technology to inform the other participants on this technology as part of the SAMM project.
Presentation Defense
On Friday, December 10, 2010, a delegation of the Dutch Defense visited Tedopres to be informed about the progress of the SAMM project.
Demonstration TeXXmo
On Thursday, December 2, 2010, the German manufacturer teXXmo Mobile Solution visited us for a demonstration of several solutions. The above video gives an impression of the presentation and demonstration teXXmo had to offer as part of the SAMM project.
Demonstration Augmented Reality HMD
On Wednesday, October 13, 2010, the French manufacturer Laster Technologies visited Tedopres to demo their product, the Pro Mobile Display.
Demonstration maintenance activities
On Wednesday, September 22, 2010, we visited the Dutch Defense (OTCLog in Soesterberg) to demonstrate a number of maintenance activities on a Scania WLS. For this vehicle we will include a number of maintenance procedures in the SAMM project. Our thanks to the Dutch Defense and Sergeant Van Staveren for allowing us to give a good impression of this demonstration.
